Money goes where attentions are

I was taking a stroll in the hypermarket one afternoon while passing by the electrical appliance department, I saw some of the television set on display playing some HD movies. I stood for a while watching an interesting plot on play. The experience was pleasant eventhough I would have to stand to watch.

It struck my mind as to why I don't have the pleasant feeling while watching at home? I thought for a while, and finally I notice that lot of advertisement were aired during show time. Advertisement slot during the running of a drama or movies reduces the excitement of the show. It could be understood the screening of the movies on television is not free because the TV station would have to pay a loyalty for the copyright holder for airing the show. All the programs shown daily are free for everyone. All you need is to have a device (television in this case) to received the signal broadcast by the TV station.

This seems a fair deal, you get to watch free show and they slot in advertisement to make some profits. People who advertisement during prime time, pay more because these are peak hours where lots of people would be sitting in front of the television.

Is advertising on television worthwhile?

The amount of ads shown tells everything. Ads played on television are counted by seconds and advertiser pay for every seconds of it. During prime hour, rates are much more higher.

These are all the basic concepts behind free a access to entertainments or services.

The same principle apply world wide to free service provide like Google, which provide search results based on a set of search words (keyword). Almost anything you need, chances are good you can find it on Google. Ever cross you mind how Google is going to make money since they don't charge you for using their search engine?

The current trendy, social media like facebook. They allow people to create account to access to their site and get connected with friends. Nowadays people don't ask do you have email account that much anymore, "What's your facebook account" sounds more familiar.

Things are having a different scenario in the commerce scene in Malaysia. Paid service provider are clearly taking advantages of their paid users. Mobile service provider like Maxis sent advertisements to their mobile subscribers as though you're using their telecommunication network for free. There is no way one can opt out. Paid TV station like Astro, charges users a fee for each channel they subscribe and yet airing advertisement during show time. People, Malaysian in particular just aren't aware they have paid for a channel and paid services doesn't comes with ads!

Malaysian are either tame or simple do not know their rights. Laws governing abuses in the cyber communities are just too weak or non at all. This is partly because a majority of the Malaysian ministers are 'Jaguh Kampung' (village champion) and not capable of understand the need and the threat in the new digital millenium.

Big corporation like MAS (Malaysia Airline System), which is Malaysian goverment owned, uses SMS spam as part of their marketing strategy.

The prime minister of Malaysia wanted to buy the story of a paid email services which charge based on email count. He has intention of using this service for all Malaysia goverment agencies.
